Why uPVC Doors Stop Locking

uPVC door locks fail more often than any other domestic lock type in the UK, and it's rarely the euro cylinder that's to blame first. Most calls turn out to be the multi-point gearbox — the mechanism housed inside the door edge that the handle drives to push hooks, rollers and a deadbolt out into the frame. Gearboxes wear out gradually: the plastic and metal components inside take thousands of lift-and-lock cycles over the years, and eventually a cog strips, a spring weakens, or a hook simply stops extending far enough to catch. The classic symptom is a handle that still lifts normally but a door that won't actually lock, or that locks on some points but not others.

Diagnosing the Gearbox vs the Cylinder

The two most common uPVC lock failures — gearbox and cylinder — present differently, and telling them apart matters because the fix and the price are different. If the key won't turn in the barrel at all, or turns freely without doing anything, that points to the euro cylinder. If the handle lifts and the key turns but the door still won't lock properly, or the door feels like it's "not quite catching," that points to the gearbox. We check both on every visit rather than assuming, because a worn cylinder and a worn gearbox can develop at the same time on an older door.

Euro Cylinders and Anti-Snap Security

Standard euro cylinders, especially older ones without any anti-snap rating, are a well-known weak point on uPVC and composite doors — a lock snap attack takes seconds and doesn't need much skill. When we replace a cylinder, we'll usually recommend an anti-snap, British Standard (kitemarked) cylinder as a like-for-like upgrade; it fits the same door in the same way as a standard cylinder but is built with a sacrificial section that breaks away without exposing the cam that operates the mechanism.

Door Alignment and Seasonal Drop

uPVC doors expand and contract with temperature more than people expect, and hinges gradually settle under their own weight over the years. A door that's dropped slightly, even by a few millimetres, is often enough to stop the multi-point mechanism's hooks and the keeps in the frame lining up properly — which can look exactly like a lock fault when it's actually an alignment issue. Adjusting the hinges (most uPVC doors have adjustable hinges built in) is often all that's needed, and it's worth checking before any parts are replaced.

Preventing the Next Failure

A little maintenance goes a long way with uPVC door hardware. Locks and multi-point mechanisms benefit from an occasional light lubrication — a proper lock lubricant rather than a general household oil, which can attract grit and make things worse over time. It's also worth checking the hinges before winter, since a door that's slightly out of alignment puts extra strain on the gearbox every time it's locked, and that strain adds up. If a lock has started to feel stiff or the handle needs extra effort to lift, that's usually the point to have it looked at rather than waiting for it to fail completely — a stiff mechanism caught early is often a quick adjustment; the same mechanism left to fail completely is more often a full gearbox replacement.
