Broken Key Removal FAQs
My key has snapped in the lock — what should I do?
Don't try to force the remaining piece further into the lock or turn it — that can make extraction harder. Call us and in most cases the broken piece can be removed the same visit without needing to force anything.
Will I need a new lock after a key is extracted?
Often not — the cylinder is frequently fine once the broken piece is out, and we'll simply cut a replacement key. If the lock feels worn or unreliable, we'll flag that and talk through whether it's worth replacing.
How much does broken key removal cost?
It depends on the job, but most work falls between £39 and £250 (see the pricing table below), with a from £39 call-out for emergency visits. You'll always get a clear price before any work starts.
How fast can someone get to me?
Most call-outs are attended within 15-30 minutes, 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, across all 110 UK postcode areas we cover.
Are your locksmiths qualified and insured?
Yes. Every locksmith we send is DBS checked and fully insured, and all work carries a 12-month guarantee.
Broken Key Removal — What to Expect
A key snapping in the lock is one of the more common calls we get, and it happens for a mix of reasons: a worn or stiff cylinder that needs more force than it should, cold weather making metal more brittle, or simply a key that's been copied one too many times and has grown thin at a weak point.
The instinct when a key snaps is often to try to turn the remaining piece or push it further in to see what happens — it's worth resisting that. Leaving the broken piece where it is and calling gives us the best chance of removing it cleanly using the right extraction tools, rather than the fragment jamming further into the mechanism.
Once the broken piece is out, we'll check the cylinder is turning properly and cut a replacement key on the spot in most cases, so you're not left waiting for a second visit. If the cylinder itself feels worn — stiff, loose, or like it's on its way to failing again — we'll say so and talk through whether a replacement makes more sense than risking a repeat call-out.
Extraction is usually a quick, same-visit job with the price agreed before we start, whatever time of day or night the key happens to snap.
A key that snaps once is sometimes just bad luck, but a lock that claims two or three keys over time is telling you something — usually that the cylinder itself has become too stiff or worn to trust, even after the immediate extraction is sorted. Worth mentioning if it's happened before.
We carry key-cutting equipment on every visit, so in the majority of cases you'll leave with a working replacement key the same day, rather than needing to arrange cutting separately once the lock issue is resolved.
